Asus N53J memory expansion question

Hello,

I have 6 GB total RAM currently (3x 2GB modules), and one spare slot (out of 4 total).
If I put in a 8GB module into the last spare slot would that work and get me 14GB? Or I would have to remove the the 2GB module in the "matching" slot and end up with only 12GB total?

Hi there.
I've just checked for you. Please first check the full version you got.

N53Jf -> Max 8 Gbyte @ DDR3 1066 Mhz
N53Jg -> Max 16 Gbyte @ DDRR 1066 Mhz
N53Jl -> Max 16 Gbyte @ DDR3 1333 Mhz
N53Jn -> Max 16 Gbyte @ DDR3 1066 Mhz
N53Jq -> Max 16 Gbyte @ DDR3 1066 Mhz

For the N53Jf you only can put 2x 4 Gbyte mem strips.
For all the 16Gbyte slot versions of the N53 a maximum of 4 Gbyte is supported.

I have a N53JQ, so I can only give it max of 16GB total and it does not take RAM module larger than 4GB.

The listed max was created before 8gb sticks were around so only says 16gb because that is what they tested. 8gb sticks should work fine but there is always a chance of not working when mixing. Also why are you upgrading?

Good to know, guess I will have to find a hardware place where they will allow me to take back the module for exchange if it does not work.

I wanted to upgrade the memory due to I started to use the laptop for development work, currently working on a very small project already eats 90% of the memory and I have to shutdown all other processes. It would be nice if 8GB module will work in it, it will give more than double my current memory which should able to handle the actual project I will be working on.

Just tested it here for you and sorry, its a no go. I've did the test with:

Corsair SODIMM DDR3,1333-8GB
Corsair SODIMM DDR3,1600-8GB

Think the best way is to stick with 4x4 Gbyte. Tested this unit with the latest Bios version: 211
