Why are so many notebooks now using only 1366 x 768 displays?

I'm using an HP-Compaq notebook 6710b which is now nearing retirement age (4+ yrs).

It has a 16 x 10 display with 1680 x 1050 native resolution. This gives me good depth on the screen when working with spreadsheets, using websites, working on portrait-orientation documents, etc.

Most available notebooks seem to be using 1366 x 768 resolution. Having tried one or two I feel I am viewing the world through a narrower horizontal 'slit" rather than a window...

Why have manufacturers standardised on this lower resolution?

Is there a database somewhere that organises currently available laptops by screen resolution so I can easily find any exceptions to this standard?

if you are looking for the cheap, $350 - 400 range, thats about all you are going to find. try looking for something a little more upscale.

It's because 1080p is 16x9 and is pretty much the standard now. You can search on newegg by res but you really won't find much that is not 16x9. I'd just suggest you going up to a 1600x900 or 1920x1080.

I don't think 1600 x 900 is going to cut it either. Still 20% less depth than my current. And for that resolution with HP I would have to be looking around the $2-3k price range.

Haven't seen anything in a 15.x inch size with 1920 x 1080 - can you suggest some brands/models?

My budget is under $2k (Australian prices). I'm not playing down the shallow $350-$400 end of the pool.

I've seen many $900+ (USD) laptops with 1920x1080. One model is the Lenovo Y580, there are also several Sony and Asus that have that resolution as well. While you may not find them in 14" laptops, they do exist in 15"+ laptops.

Go to www.newegg.com and checkout the laptop section and filter on 1920x1080 resolution to get an idea what is available. Perhaps similar models are sold in Australia.
