I have been looking at this laptop:

HP dv6t quad edition - $970(with academic discount)
http://shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-Pavilion/B2P41UA?HP-Pavilion-dv6-7014nr-Entertainment-Notebook-PC

specs:

Intel core i7-3610qm 2.3ghz
750gb 7200rpm
gt650m 2gb gddr5
8gb ddr3 ram
1080p screen
backlit keyboard

I was wondering if there was 1. a cheaper alternative that would also suit my needs (1080p screen, at least 7200rpm hdd, processor needed for video editing: not sure if quad core is needed or not) or 2. is there another computer that has better specs for the same price

There is an AMD based laptop I configuered for you

Operating system Windows 8 64 edit
Processor AMD Quad-Core A10-4600M Accelerated Processor (3.2GHz/2.3GHz, 4MB L2 Cache)
Graphics card 2GB AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7670M Discrete-Class Graphics
Memory 12GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
Hard drive 750GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
Office software No Additional Office Software
Security software No additional security software
Primary battery 9 Cell Lithium Ion Battery edit
Display 15.6-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1366x768)
Primary optical drive SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
Personalization HP TrueVision HD Webcam with integrated dual array digital microphone
Networking 802.11b/g/n WLAN
Keyboard Standard Keyboard
price- 924.99

Idk how much your discount is, but you can always switch the battery to a 6 cell and the ram to 8 gigs, in order to get an HD screen

This would probably be better for gaming/editing as you can do hybrid crossfire with the intergrated and discrete gpu's

What website is this from? Also, I have heard that AMD processors are nowhere near as good as Intel. Is this true? How does this processor compare to the i7-3610qm?

Ok, so back to my two questions:

1. Is there a cheaper alternative to this computer(is the dv6t a bit overkill????)?
or
2. Is there a computer around the same price point with better specs?

Okay...seeing as how it's an APU it's a different story, you can hybrid crossfire it with the 7670M to get better performance, the 7670M by itself is equal to a 550M..
You have no clue what your talking about.. and the die size has almost NO affect on performance.. only heat/watt usage.
