Hd notebook how to install operating system

I am trying to install an operating system on my notebook. It crashed and hp sent me the operating 2 DVD and I had to buy the DVD writer. I followed instruction but there is no f2, so I am stuck and cannot install it. Please is there anybody who can help me?

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

The DVD Writer doesn't need to be installed - just plugged in to a USB Port. You only need the Function 2 key to be able to goo into the BIOS or Setup to tell the system to look for the DVD for a bootable disk to be able to start the installation process.

If F2 or anything else doesn't appear on the screen when you power up, the notebook has bigger problems than the lack of an OS. Does your screen show anything when you switch on? Can you hear anything going on in there?
