How to get whats on the Laptop screen onto TV?

i have a hp pavilion entertainment pc laptop and i am trying to get a vga-hdmi cable to connect laptop to tv, i have tried to use function -f10 etc but no chance, i have also changed the settings in properties etc again to no avail. can you hep?

What vga to hdmi converter did you get? VGA is an analog signal, hdmi is digital, you will need an active converter to make this work. Is the TV showing up as a second monitor in Windows? If your TV has an HDMI port, it should have a VGA port unless it's a cheaper TV, try using just the VGA input.

what graphics card are you using? ATI will have Catalyst Control Center to set this up, and Nvidia will have its own Control Panel. Each should be found in Start->Programs or your computer's Control Panel.
