Obligatory FAQ questionaire below.

1) What is your budget?
USD$500 to 700

2) What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
Something portable. I need it on cruise ship job.

3) What screen resolution do you want?
Not sure what this means as I am not tech savy. I assume more the better.

4) Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Portable..

5) How much battery life do you need?
As much as possible is always preferred.

6) Do you want to play games with your laptop?
Yes, in fact that is one of the key elements I am looking for.

Games I would be playing may include things like:
COD series (MW3 and later)
GTA IV and upcoming GTA V
Minecraft
And things of similar nature. First person shooters and open world adventures.

7) What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop?
Serf internet, check email, word processor. Simple basic stuff.

8) How much storage (H.D.D Capacity) do you need?
Not sure, but more the merrier they say.

9) If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
Nothing specific

10) How long do you want to keep your laptop?
As long as possible.

11) What kind of Optical drive do you need?
I don't know what that means. I assume dvds and cds?

12) Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
I like Macs because they are easier to use in my opinion.

13) What country do you live in?
USA

14) Please tell us any additional information if needed.
I have been looking at alien ware m11x, Asus G73JH-A1 (to big). I really don't know where to start. I play console games on xbox 360 and am looking for something comparable that I can take with me on a cruise ship, since bringing a console is obviously out of the question.

Looks good at first, but after upgrading it to work for games it ends up around 16-1800 bucks.

Thanks for the info. I edited my budget though. I want to say 500 to 700 dollar range. I found a laptop called the m6-1035dx by HP. Is that a good laptop for games? i.e GTA 4 etc. The price tag is around 640$ which I like. Any insights?

what is portable to you?

15.6 inches is pretty portable. 5 to 7 pounds maybe? Im more worried about cost than portability. Im sure a top of the line hardcore gaming computer will be too big, so something less than that but still good enough to play Battlefield 3, COD MW3, Fallout, like mentioned above. Some coms I have found recently include : Acer aspire v3-571G-6602, Asus G1 Sn-x1, Acer aspire AS5560G-7809, Acer aspire 5750G and acer aspire 5755G. All under $5-600 dollars.

Any one have any ideas on the quality of those machines or compatibility for what Im looking for?

Cheers

*Jumps in his time machine*
*Brings back the XZ493 virtual screen super computer*
*realizes that 10000 years into the future gaming laptops still dont exist*
*flushes the XZ493 down the toilet....because its that portable*

If by "still good enough to play Battlefield 3, COD MW3, Fallout" you mean play solitaire, you should be good to go. If you cannot go on a cruise without playing said solitaire...you may want to seek help.

If your looking at the $700 price range read my review of HP-G7z-2100 CTO. I think that you are going to have a hard time Finding a really good gaming laptop. But I have one and it does really good job for games. I need to update it, I was having ram issues, I'm getting about a 1000 marks more in vantage.
I was getting about 30 to 35 FPS in Home Front, full settings.
