Lenovo Y580 vs. Sager NP9130

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a new gaming laptop soon, and I've narrowed it down to these two: the Lenovo Y580 and the Sager NP9130.

Lenovo has i7, 660M, 500GB HDD, 8GB RAM, 1920x1080 screen for $1000.
Sager has i7, 670M, 750GB HDD, 8GB RAM, slightly better 1920x1080 screen, better wireless card for $1100 (Or I can get it with an i5 for ~$1040)

Important things are performance and general build quality (also battery life to an extent)
I'm kind of leaning toward the Sager, but I don't know if I really want the 670M since it's built on Fermi, not the newer Kepler.
This is it, though. Any advice is very much appreciated; I've been trying to decide forever and I just don't know what to do!

The Sager comes with an I5 for 1100$, not I7.

In your case, I'd say the Y580 - better battery life + the fact that the screen on the Sager isn't the best. The upgrade option will cost to much.
The difference in the performance is not something that should bother you as it won't do any difference almost in no case.


Another thing is that with the money that you save you can buy a nice mSSD or SSD for your Y580.

I can get the Sager with an i7 for $1100. I don't know if that changes anything, but I can. Also, would I be able to overclock the 660M in the Lenovo?

The sager in that case is better, more hardrive space and a better graphics card

Yes the battery life will be less, but if you are keeping this for more than a year, best to go with the more powerful option

Apparently the 660m runs cool enough to allow it to be overclocked quite well.

They say you shouldn't overclock laptops, but with my Y570, (i5-2410m+GT555m) The GPU also ran extremely cool, Overclocked it by +300Mhz and the card still sticks at 75C MAX playing games like BF3.

The GT660m would seem to be very similar, i've seen a few forum threads applauding their 660m overclocks to +350Mhz, bringing it past the GT670m in performance whilst still remaining cooler then the 670m during gaming.

By the looks of it, the Y580 has the same JBL speakers as my Y570. These speakers are absolutely fantastic quality.

*I have ZERO experience with sager products, so hopefully someone can come in who does have some, and provide a counterargument as to why the other should be chosen.

Yeah I would go with the Lenovo; if the 670m is much faster, my assumption is that it's going to be much much hotter since it's just a rebrand (unless it's a die shrunk Fermi).

Laptops have enough trouble with GPU overheats.

I also have 0 Sager experience, so I'm obviously a little biased away from them as well.

Alright, well if anyone cares, I just ordered the Y580 from B&H. I actually got it with a 1TB drive for $1060. So I'm pretty excited!
