I have a pretty old Gateway laptop with xp home, model number is worn offf so no help there.

It is plugged into the ac adapter 24 hours a day because the battery is on its lat leg and it will all of a sudden cut off while it is plugged into the power cord, we never unplug it.

It may tay on for 2 days, a week, or an hour you never know, battery indicates its charging and getting a full charge but it die so fast we leave it plugged into the wall.

any help would be great, ty

Sounds like your laptop might be full of dust/debris. Do you have any pets?

Your laptops internals might be clogged with dust/pet dander/hair which could lead to overheating of your CPU or GPU - which will automatically shut down if it gets too hot.

If you don't feel like taking the laptop apart, or don't feel comfortable doing it - take a can of compressed air and blow out all the vents (first make sure your laptop is off, unplugged, and the battery is out of course).

Make sure your can of compressed air is upright when you use it - as you don't want any liquid from the can of compressed air getting inside.

It may not completely get rid of the dust bunnies, but at least it should clear out some parts.
