Hi all.

I am in the throes of determining what laptop to purchase, and I am not the most savvy in the tech department.

It will be used as my primary computer- thus for typical casual internet searching, watching/streaming films and music, graduate coursework, etc., although I would like it to be capable of performing more or less rudimentary gis functions (with appropriate software, of course). Absolutely no interest in gaming. My budget is 600 US.

That being said, I am not quite clear if I should absolutely choose i5 over i3, 7200 vs. 5400 rpm, OR 4/6/8 GB. What would one suggest so that I'm not simply throwing money at unused power/performance?

I have taken a liking to the: DELL Inspiron 15R (N5110) Notebook Intel Core i5 2410M(2.30GHz) 15.6" 8GB Memory DDR3 1333 750GB HDD 5400rpm DVD±R/RW Intel HD Graphics 3000, but have also noted the ASUS A53E-AH51 15.6" Notebook, Intel Core i5-2430M (2.4GHz), 4GB DDR3 Memory, 640GB HD, DVD Super Multi-Drive, Intel GMA HD, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Getting the upgrades you mention are more along the lines of 'luxuries' if you have the spare change to grab them.
Everything you mention doing will run (and run very well) on the i3/5400rpm/4GB models.

You didn't mention the prices of the Inspiron 15R or 53E-AH5 you were looking at.
