Hello,
We've had this computer for about 3 years. We've been through a couple power cords, but now the computer won't charge at all. We took it to a Big Box Store to have it looked at and we were told the power port is bad and that it *Might* be able to be fixed it it's not fully intertwined with the motherboard. If it is "motherboard dependent", we'd be better off buying a new computer. How do I find out (in a cheap way) if the power port is fully intertwined with the motherboard or not? I saw some forums where people said it was just a soilder issue. How do I know these things (as a layman)? Help!

Solution
its called a DC Jack. And most dell's have them integrated into the motherboard. In which case you would need to take the motherboard out and remove the bad DC Jack and solder a new DC jack onto the motherboard. Not for novice's! It is not difficult but I would not recommend it unless you have soldered before...

This link shows a picture of the motherboard... the little silver and black square on the bottom left middle-ish area is the DC jack. You would need to solder a new one on.
