Wrong/No GPU info

Hi I have a Toshiba P100 laptop.
The problem is that the GPU fan is always 100% and I cant find a way to turn them down for light study work in the library..
In MSI Afterburner I get a reported temperature of 256degrees C! and 0 GPU usage even when playing games. I have recently cleaned out the fans and it definitely
is not running at that temperature!!
Anyway I am hoping someone knows how to resolve this as I'm sick of my laptop sounding like a jet aircraft in the library

Shut down the afterburner.

What temp is your CPU running?
That could cause the fan to run to 100% when you're not gaming.

CPU is only 40-50 degrees and shutting down afterburner makes no difference
