When i try to connect my laptop to my tv it just says no signal

I am trying to connect my acer aspire 5732z to my lg 42"plasma tv using a vga cable to an hdmi i dont know what im doing wrong , the tv just says no signal?

You're going from VGA to HDMI, correct? That means you are going from analog to digital picture. Where did you get the adapter to do such?
