You know for that price I think you can get a good laptop that isn't Dell. Since you want a laptop for gaming, I think Dell is not the best choice because they always try to save money on the graphics card, which is a very important component in a gaming pc.

If you must get a dell, I'd look at Alienware M14x, it's a 14" system, but it's got the best mid range GPU and should fit into your budget. (i7-2630, with 4gb ram and GT555m comes around 1200 USD)

While alternatively you could look at
Sager Np8130 - 15", GTX560m, i7-2630
or
Asus G73 - 17", i7-740qm, GTX460m, but you will probably be able to find the 560m models as well.

I'm pretty sure he meant start up and shut down... for that, the best solution would be an SSD Hard drive. SSDs are expensive. And there aren't many laptop models in your price range that come with an SSD... If there are any.

I'm currently searching on Amazon for a laptop.

I have to say sercanreyiz, portability, gaming and 17" laptops don't blend.

You'll automatically be looking at a 6+ pound laptop (not KG) if you want something big like that.

Laptop good for some gaming, 15.6" weights 6.4 Pounds, has a 540m, and a Core i7, which is good for things like programming, costs 1000 dollars.: http://www.amazon.com/N53SV-XV1-15-6-Inch-Versatile-Entertainment-Aluminum/dp/B004L9M4QY/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1312817492&sr=1-3

Great for gaming, 560m, Core i5, 17.3" Screen, 7.5 Pounds, 1150 Dollars:

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Qosmio-X775-Q7270-17-3-Inch-Screen/dp/B0057483DK/ref=sr_1_16?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1312817492&sr=1-16

Good for gaming, more portable then the Toshiba above, this laptop has a 460m, which is a good graphics card for gaming, but it isn't as good as the Toshiba Qosmio, you'll still be able to play the games you want on max, it has a Core i7, like many of the other ones, which will help the computer turn on and off faster, and also do lots of other things. It costs 1360 Dollars.
http://www.amazon.com/G53SW-A1-Republic-Gamers-15-6-Inch-Gaming/dp/B004V93OZE/ref=sr_1_11?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1312817909&sr=1-11

These computers will still take a while to turn on and on, probably between 40-120 seconds.

You can make it start up in 5-10 seconds if you buy a different type of hard drive, called SSD- Solid State Drive.

SSDs are digital memory, so they are accessed much faster, and you can load files like Windows 7 much faster.

The standard hard drive, is a mechanical hard drive, these come in different speeds measured in RPM, the average hard drive is either 5,400 rpm, or 7,200 rpm, 7,200 rpm is better, since it spins faster, there are hard drives that have 10,000 rpm, but they are expensive, and SSDs would be a better hard drive to get.

Here is a comparison between prices of SSDs and HDDs (Mechanical Hard drives)

SSDs:

64 GB: 120 Dollars
128 GB: 200 Dollars
256 GB: 400 Dollars
512 GB: 700 Dollars

HDDs (Mechanical Hard drives)

7,200 RPM

250 GB: 50 Dollars
500 GB: 70 Dollars
750 GB: 90 Dollars
1000 GB: 100 Dollars

5,400 RPM

250 GB: 45 Dollars
500 GB: 60 Dollars
640 GB: 75 Dollars
750 GB: 90 Dollars
1000 GB: 100 Dollars

If you do have the money you'd like to spend on a SSD, that's great. But it will take a while depending on your experience to set it up, and you'll have to re-install windows onto the SSD, along with all the correct drivers for both the laptop and SSD.

The best thing would be to buy a laptop that comes with a SSD, but those laptops are generally very expensive, even if the rest of the parts aren't very good.
