Hey everyone. Coming to you guys once again for help. I recently purchased a Dell N5010 around September of last year (2010) and it was working perfectly fine up until about 4-5 months ago. I used to be able to play NFS: Hot Pursuit at max details, Splinter Cell: Conviction also at max, basically most games at max including Crysis 2.

Now I know I don't have the best graphics card (it's an HD 4650) but it SERIOUSLY runs games beautiful. However, 4-5 months ago, I suddenly noticed the laptop getting a bit hot... and as of now it gets extremely hot. As of right now, I'm simply typing this and my temperatures are at about 60-65 degrees Celsius. I bought this cooling pad for it but it was a cheap one and is quite ineffective and only reduces temps by about like 2 degrees.

If I, for example, were to launch NFS Shift 2 Unleashed (runs it at mostly all high without a hitch), give it like 15 minutes, and it auto-shuts off. I would feel the upper left hand area of the laptop and it would be a bit hot, and the area in the center by the touchpad gets EXTREMELY hot! Now I'm asking you guys to help me out here. How can I reduce the heat produced by this laptop? Should I take it to a laptop repair center (I know a really good place closeby that mostly deals with gaming) and tell them to replace the fans and to install a better heatsink? You guys know of any EFFECTIVE cooling pad? I have $$$ to spend to get this laptop up to par! So denizens of Tom's Hardware, please help! I don't really wanna return the laptop, so what should I do?

Here are the system specs, posting em from dxdiag 64-bit:

Well, I don't think you can't simply replace the heatsink like you could in a desktop. In a desktop, as long as you have enough space and the correct socket compatibility you can install just about any heatsink you want. For a laptop it is different. I don't think there is another heatsink except the one that comes with the laptop. I could be wrong.

There might be some dust built up inside your laptop. A technician can clean it out, if you do not want to open the laptop to check. You might want to replace the thermal paste with something better like Arctic Silver 5 or IC Diamond. If they actually have a better heatsink then go for it I suppose.

So laptop heatsinks aren't really replaceable? Sigh... So the only I could do is replace the thermal paste and dust out the laptop? No fans are replaceable at all? I'm really getting sick of this overheating problem.

Yeah dust is usually the main cause of laptop overheating problems. But not just clogging up the fan. Check all the airvents are clear too. Your heatsink fan setup shouldnt be a problem as it was designed specifically for the components in that laptop. Wear and tear to the fan could possibly slow down the rpms causing heat issues but you would probably notice the difference in the sound of the fan. Replacement fans are available - but in my experience most laptops have different size/shape fans so you would have to get the correct oem fan for your Dell machine. Might be worth checking ebay.....

I googled up on how to clean the dust in the N5010 and found a manual from Dell. Apparently it takes about 10 minutes. The question now however is should I do it myself or just leave it in the hands of a laptop repair technician?

that depends. some laptops have to be stripped right down down to access the fan/heatsink assy. others have a removable panel on the underside. I seem to remember that most of the dell models i have worked on have had the removable panel which makes it extremely easy but no doubt some dell models will not have this! flip it over and see what is underneath. you will probably have a few different removable panels - memory, hdd, wireless etc. but if you remove them one by one starting with the biggest then hopefully you will reveal the cpu fan assy. if it is easy to remove then take it out to clean, if not clean it as best you can. i find a long bristled soft brush does a good job and if you have a can of compressed air then even better.

So you think I should do it myself? I'm a bit scared but from the forums I saw where others did it apparently it's quite easy... and they all had good results... Any tips on cleaning it? I checked the manual and it's like removing about 3 panels on the bottom and the keyboard.

One word, Thermal Compound.
I used MX-4 paste on my inspiron and got a 20C drop in temps!
Also, dust out the vents!!!

A reason why I gave up on dell is because you practically need a degree to even get to the heatsink! To reinforce your knowledge, check out this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-5YSPimZCk It details HDD removal but is a partial teardown

Wth? 20C drop with just a thermal paste?! I wonder if this place I'd take it too has that thermal paste...

I made up my mind. I'll take it this good tech store closeby for a full service. Let em open it, dust it out properly, re-apply a really good thermal paste, and from what I read I can replace the fans/heatsink so I'll tell em replace those one time... I will make this damn dell work!

Well, my laptop had 4 year old crusty stuff wedged in there (I think it actually started raising the temps), so really, any paste woulda done it, I just prefer MX-4. Everyone has a preference.

Can you please post the lionk. I am having the same issues and would like to remedy this. I am thinking it is the dust problem because my house was under chaos for quite a while (Read: renovation). Awaiting your reply.

I recently disassembled a friend's M5010 to try and cure its overheating: About a fifteen minute job to get to the cpu, with lots of screws to remove, but quite straightforward. (Dell has a good service manual posted online.)

I was surprised to find almost no lint or dust around the fan. The inside was very clean. Thermal compound on the cpu was dry, but the blue thermal pads on the gpu and bridge chipset looked good.

I applied new Arctic-silver to the cpu and reassembled the unit. It ran somewhat cooler, but it still has occasional shutdowns and blue-screens. Although the heatsink looked very good, I wonder if maybe it is bad. What gives with these machines?

Has anybody tried replacing the blue pads with copper shims? How did that work?

This model really, really gets hot.

The Dell N5010 really needs to be elevated at the very least as there are vents on the bottom...this helps some.

I had the same problem, until my husband brought home a another cooling pad. He thought someone had taken it apart because the fans were reverse direction of my prior ones. He was going to swith it but I asked him to let me try it first. The fans pull air from instead if blowing it to cool. Well, I've been using it since (3months) and my Dell is always cool. I use it hours on end, Perfect fix. ------------------

I started to get a blue screen after a couple of hours streaming from Netflix. The laptop was running hot and I did not want to remove the Dell N5010 case to get to the fan and to the CPU heatsink (remove old and apply thermal paste) in order to thoroughly clean it. What I did was to spray the vent with a dust buster spray can with the machine unplugged. When I sprayed the specific vent - underneath the laptop - dust came out of the fan vent on the left side; closest to the display. It was a visible cloud. Now, when the I touch the fan/vent, I can feel a good amount of air flow and my laptop is cool as it once was new. I think my maintenance process will just consist of spraying this vent from time to time. My laptop is about 1 year and 15 months old since I got it new. Thanks for this forum, I got a lot of useful info from it. Al in Santa Clara, Ca.

I have a 2 year old n5010, just had the motherboard, heatsink / fan replaced today under warranty. Tech showed me on the old heatsink fins full of dust. said to occ. use canned air and spray AWAY from the edge at an angle to blow dust out on that bottom left vent. Now blowing the hot air out the left back side vent good BUT still getting pretty warm- temps are 88c and 89c. ai have the back elevated up about 1.5 inches , I am using Core Temp 1.0 RC3 - 64 bit to monitor temp, is this a ok program to use or is there better/more accurate one to use?

Thanks

I flashed my BIOS as I forgot the system password. Since then my laptop fan runs faster than usual and also it heats up very high. I used dell diagnostics cd and found errors in CPU thermistor, Other Thermistor and Processor fan speed.
Results:

CPU_Thermistor: The temprature sensor is out of range at 0C
Other_Thermistor: The temprature sensor is out of range at 0C
Processor Fan: The fan speed is incorrect.

Hey guys. i had the same problem with my dell n5010 overheating and shuting down. I dessabled it all the way to the motherboard. removed the heat sink and re-applied thermal paste as the original was dry, cleaned out the heat sink to remove the dust. replace the orignal rubber feet and raise them 1/4" the laptop now runs great and cool like a cucomber.
