Trouble using optical drive

Hello,
I recieved a Acer laptop as a gift it has optical drive and says all dvds and discs will play butthe hole in disc I have been using are too small to go on the spindle in new computer. why is this?

Some times you have to press down on the disk to get the spindle to compress and accept the disk.
