I would recommend two laptops.

The first is the Toshiba Satellite C650 for $379. Its full-size portable PC that can tackle life’s basics. Should be enough for what you need it to do. Here are some specs:
Screen
15.6" (1366x768) HD
Processor
2.3 GHz AMD V Series Processor v140
RAM
3 GB DDR3
Storage
250 GB HDD 5400 RPM

The other is the HP G62t for $449. A 15.6" high-definition display with 16:9 ratio makes the HP® G62t especially great for watching movies. Here are some specs:
Screen
15.6" (1366x768) HD
Processor
2.13 GHz Intel® Core™ Dual Core Processor P6200
RAM
4 GB DDR3
Storage
320 GB HDD 7200 RPM

Can't go wrong with either of these! What do you think?
