Ok, I have an Asus G72GX (Best Buy addition) with the Core 2 Duo P8700. I am considering upgrading my CPU to either a X9100 (Core 2 Extreme) or to a QE9300 (Core 2 Quad Extreme). I've heard of guys upgrading to the X9100 without much trouble and have heard of guys upgrading to the Q9000, but haven't heard of the QE9300 upgrade. Any thoughts?

Edit: Looks like the X9100 will work. However, the guys over at the NBR forums seem to think the QX9300 will not work due to the dual core version of the laptop missing part of the voltage regulator module required for the quad cores.

Just because I am curious. These extreme chips are typically mad expensive. Have you found them for cheap or are you that willing to put the money into the laptop?

I found the QX9300 for $450 & the X9100 for under $250 guaranteed. I am willing to invest in my G72, but not more than $800 or so. I just really like the computer and would like to boost it's performance some. Just going out & buying a G73 is too easy (and expensive....lol). I guess if I do the CPU I'll end up rolling with the X9100. Thanks for the reply.

After following the above link & doing a bit more research I think I'm going to go the T9900 route. The X9100 is hit or miss with the Best Buy model (which I have), but the T9900 gives the same performance increase and works well in the G72 according to other owners who have also partaken in this upgrade. Now I'm wondering about the 15% overclock I can gain with the "Turbo Gear Extreme" software included on with the G72. Would the T9900 overclock by 15% ok or would heat become an issue? Any ideas?
