Hello,
I have an asus 8100 and want to add the wireless capability. Do I need a card to do so and if so are they universal?

Check the specs for this model and see if it is sometimes supplied with inbuilt wireless OR check all the hatches on the bottom of the machine and see if one contains a MiniPCI socket (pics of Mini PCI devices on this page) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conventional_PCI --- there may also be loose connectors for antenna(s).

You can be lucky with retro fitting wireless -- I've put a Intel wireless mini PCI card from an old Philips laptop into a Dell -- but sometimes the computer won't cooperate.

The simpler alternative is to buy a PCMCIA or USB wireless adapter.
