How to get Monitor speakers to work with external speakers?

I have a monitor with built in speakers but i just dont think it gets loud enough and I have external speakers but i cant seem to get them to work together at the same time... How can I make this happen?

Get an audio splitter, install it at the PC jack and plug both speakers into that. I would not use both of them though, they are not made to be run together and would sound a bit odd. Speakers should be matched for best sound, similar response range, wattage, etc...
