Max resolution using external monitor

Hi,
I have just bought a new dell laptop.
I am tring to conect my 24" samsung to it (1920x1200) but will only give 1600x1200 as maximum.
I am using the vga output, as it dosn't have a dvi output. I think this may be the problem, i just need to confirm it.
It does have a hdmi output, so i'm guessing i will need a hdmi to dvi cable?

Check what the maximum resolution of your graphics card/chip is (In display properties). It is probably 1600x 1200 maximum if that is all you can get. Hd (1920x1200) laptops are very new so you may not have the capabilities with yours to get HD output.
