Distorted sound in headset - RealTek

Plugging in my monitor's built in speakers works fine, but using my headset distorts the sound to the point of mostly hearing bits of music and sound effects but no voices. I've testing the headset elsewhere and it works fine. I've tried troubleshooting but no luck. YouTube videos are nearly silent unless I have every volume setting on full blast; voices can be heard but other things are too loud.
Any suggestions?

for the cleanest sound, locate the mixer, click on the speaker icon in the lower right hand of the screen, then click on mixer...
lower the mixer volume levels for the inputs you are using, then raise the master volume for the computer
you see there are two volume controls, input and output (master)
lower input and higher master will clean it up somewhat.
