Akai X-1800SD Motor or capacitor?

I have an Akai X-1800SD and the2 speed motor stopped. I discovered it will start if I give it a spin from the cooling fins. I also discovered it will spin in either direction depending on which way I spin it. It just won't start on its own. Is this a capacitor or the motor itself? I assume it is a capacitor since the motor does work (on both speeds). How can I identify and test the capacitor?
