So when I look on the box's display it says 1080i, but when I press the display button it says that it's outputting 480i on the tv itself.

How do I get it to display at 1080i? I know I should get a HD cable box, but it's not my TV/money.

480i looks pretty bad on a 32" 720p TV.

Solution
Your cable box is downconverting your 1080i signal to 480i, RF is an analog signal and it's maximum resolution is 480i. As rev said, you must use component video, HDMI, or DVI to get 720p or 1080i.

Edit: If your TV and cable box both have HDMI, you can pick up an HDMI cable for less than $10.

I have the same problem and my cable box is connected via HDMI cable to the av receiver and then HDMI cable to the tv. Every time I change the volume the screen goes blank and the cable box switches back from 480p that I have to manually set the cable box at.

I have the same problem and used the HDMI and it did not look much better?
I also tried the RCA video out of the cable box to RCA video in of my TV and this looked the best?

I bought a new TV with 1080p ability but was only getting 480i.....here was my solution with Comcast service....when the TV is on and you push the info button on your Comcast remote you will see on the guide screen there is "watch in HD" highlighted yellow on the left side...push your arrow button down to select "setup"....then arrow down to "HDMI Setup" and change the TV Output Resolution to 1080i....,took me awhile to figure out, but when I did it was a completely different TV!! Hope this helps!!

We are having the same issue now after AT&T U-verse switched our old U-Verse box to a wireless one - so not sure how to resolve that since there are no cables. The picture quality stinks!
