46' Samsung or 46" Sony or 51" Samsung

Anyone know much about TVs?

46" Samsung LCD 1080P 120Hz for $700

46' Sony LCD 1080P 60Hz for $650
or
51" Samsung 720P 600Hz $600

My room can be somewhat bright during the day but it will always be away from direct sunlight

I'd probably wait for ssddx to confirm this, but unless you're looking for a 3D HDTV, you don't need a 120Hz TV and if the choice were between a 51" 720p and a 46" 1080p, you'd definitely want to go with the 46" 1080p for the sharper image.

The models you are looking at won't work in your room. Samsung TVs from last year are notorious for glossy screen. (I haven't checked it with 2012 models yet.) Cnet posted "Five best matte-screen LCDs for bright rooms (roundup)". These are 2011 models but I think they are still avilable.

Aside from 3D, the only other reason to have 120Hz is if you will be watching BD film discs. Film material is 24Hz. 120Hz is Far easier to create an unmodified frame ( 24 x 5 = 120 ) That being said, most post processing is so good in newer televisions, 95% of people can't see the difference. Also, any marketing jargon about 120hz making the picture "smoother" is garbage, unless you have an unhealth affair with watching television that looks like a soap opera. LCD is FPS locked by the panel.

Edit: Refresh rates on plasma is 100% total nonsense. They don't operate the same as LCD, it's safe to ignore this when comparing plasma to LCD.
