MY STEREO SYSTEM TRANSMITS HIGH VOLUME INTERMITTENT POPPING SOUNDS INTO THE SPEAKERS. VOLUME HAS ALSO DROPPED TO A LOW LEVEL ALONG WITH THE POPS. I BELIEVE THIS CONDITION IS CAUSED BY A BAD CONDENSER. THE QUESTION IS WHERE? I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY AN ELECTRONICS REPAIR SHOP THAT CONDENSERS CAN EXPLODE WHEN BEING REPLACED. NOT A COMFORTING THOUGHT. THE SHOP TOLD ME MY AMPLIFIER WAS A VERY OLD AND BIG "WORK HORSE." THEY WOULD NOT TOUCH IT.

Brand and model number would help establish what kind of amplifier this is -- steam ?

Or is it tubes (aka valves). Maybe you mean capacitors not condensers. A few specialist repair companies will take on valve/tube stuff so be prepared to search for one local to you via Google.

Is the popping issue on both channels or if on one channel have you tried swapping the speakers to see if it's one of them that's at fault ?

Thanks for the reply. I should have included the following information: The amplifier is a harman/Kardon 730 Twin powered.
