Homemade surround sound

Hello,
I have a some surround sound speakers and a sub woofer from a computer and I want to connect them to a cable box. the speakers came with speaker wire connected to them. is it possible for me to make a homemade surround sound system?

the cable box does not have an amplifier to power the speakers
the audio from the cable box needs to connect to an amplifier input
the amplifier output connects to the speakers
or, use powered speakers. powered speakers can be connected to the cable box audio output
