I am trying to buy a laptop for the first time. I am often on 2-3 chats at the same time, browsing, email and reading and writing on word or gdoc. I'd like to spend under $700. Can you point me in the right direction?

That's a core to duo. I would recommend a quad for a lot of multi tasking but it would be hard to get that for under $950. A core two duo is the next best thing and should handle multitasking with ease. :)

none of the tasks you are describing are really cpu intensive. I'd just make sure you have 3-4 gigs of RAM in whatever you decide on.

core 2 will be fine for what you describe, really you dont even need that much.
