Solved! What does Initializing a disc mean

Solution
when a system states "initializing disc" it normally refers to the system trying to read/load the data on the disk so that it may take the next action. ie, to browse the files or to play the disc.

it doesn't do anything to the disc itself. most players are read only so it is physically incapable of writing data/modifying said discs. only "writers" or "recorders" can alter data.
