Solved! Picture is larger than needed

Solution
lets say you are using a 16:9 resolution tv. now lets say that you are viewing a dvd that was created in 4:3, you will have black bars one two sides when viewing this movie. all the "picture sizes" do is change the zoom-in level. it will cut off some video in order to "enlarge" the video on screen. with some aspect ratios there is nothing you can change to get "full screen"

most of the trouble i've had was with cheap knock-off "b" movies, older films or foreign films. most newer domestic releases match your televisions aspect ratio, or at the very least can be zoomed-in to fit full screen (but you cut off some video or subtitles at times)
