Solved! Dull Screen - Dell Inspiron 1721

Upon start up and thereafter I have a dark screen. I know the screen is lit however I can barely see the icons on the desktop. I used an external monitor to see if the screen was the issue which I think it may be but I would hate to purchase a screen when that may not be the issued. Note I also purchased and inverter but I still have the sams issue.

Can anyone help me please.

Press the F5 key several times and see if that increases the brightness.

Or try using the Fn key and the Up Arrow key together.
