Hello,
direct tv is totally new to me, so please give me a simple answer.

I recorded a movie on direct tv.
Now I want to record it on video tape. I press the record button, but nothing happens.

So what equipment are you talking about.
I didn't think that the DTV DVR had a video tape recorder in it as well.
I think you need to hook the VCR to the DVR outputs, play the movie and record with the vcr.
