i want to buy a tv but the one i want has a 720 scan format but the other one has a 1080. what is a scan format and what does it do?

Solution
It is the max resolution 1920x1080
The second number is the vertical resolution (it's scanned onto the screen)
it is either interlaced 1080i or progressive 1080p.
progressive draws 1vert. line per horiz. scan, interlaced is effectivly 1/2 the screen scanned twice.
1080p is better
