Will formatting a disk erase it

I have 100's of pictures on my SD card. When I insert it into my computer, I get a pop-up message asking to format the disk. Will this erase my pictures?

YES!!! Formatting resets the drive and wipes everything.

it sound like your card is corrupted. you might not be able to get the pictures off. try plugging it into a different pc.
(i had this problem once and lost alot of family pics. lesson, always back up frequently.)
