Comcast has to activate the box in order for you to receive any channels. I'm pretty sure they'll deny activation if the box isn't one you rent from your local office; stating incompatibilities.

Personally, I've never asked Comcast what specs a set top box would need to meet in order for it to be compatible on Comcast's cable system.

Note: You only need a box from Comcast if you subscribe to more than just the Basic Cable tier (channels 2-29 in my area).
