This might not be the right subforum, but you guys would probably know~

So I bought a PS3 recently, and I would like to hook it up to my computer monitor (which has dvi and vga inputs). Since I already have my computer plugged into the dvi port, I want to plug the ps3 in to my vga port. I know that hdmi and DVI are interchangeable, but I was looking for cables which can convert hdmi to vga (should be simple, right? The only cable I could find was this one:
http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-VGA-HD15-Male-Cable/dp/B001OLCHJ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240798832&sr=1-1
First Question: Will it work?
Second Question: If not, is there a cheap DVI splitter that I could use to switch between my monitor DVI input and the PS3 DVI input?
Third Question: If no to both of those, should I just get a hdmi -> vga adapter and plug my computer in to the vga port and use the dvi port for my ps3?

Thanks!!

You can find DVI/HDMI switches and splitters here:

In 99% of cases, VGA cables transmit analog signals. HDMI and DVI are digital. To answer your question, no, the cable would not work for what you intend it to do.

There are HDMI-to-VGA cables but these types of cable almost never do signal conversion. This HDMI-to-VGA type of cable is only used to transmit digital signals, not analog. Some projectors have VGA connectors that accept digital signals; that's when you would use a cable like this.

I've never tried this cable,
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001FU1EMW?ie=UTF8&seller=A5O06MKMEKW5P&sn=Sintech.UK%20Ltd
but it looks like it could work. What do you have to lose except for return-shipping fees?

And to answer your third question, yes, you could buy a video card with a VGA port for your computer, hook that to the VGA port on your monitor, and then your PS3 could hook directly to the DVI port of your monitor. This solution would cost roughly the same as buying a DVI switch or that magic ps3 cable. It's a wash.

Connecting PS3 to an old PC Monitor which typically has VGA or DVI: PS3 has no VGA display driver, so you can't use a "HDMI to VGA" or HDMI to DVI" cable. Any VGA cable will not work. VGA = NO. There are special cables meant for PS3 which convert HDMI to VGA, but they are often dark and washed out, and limited to 720p instead of full HD. Amazon has them. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Playstation-Nintendo-Monitor-Cable-Lead/dp/B0015MISAG And you will also have to figure out the audio for yourself, because audio is NOT converted along with the video. You might have to connect separate speakers to the back of your PS3.

you can get a VGA cable for the Xbox 360, but as for ps3, i have no idea, but buying a HDMI-DVI converter/cable and then a DVI-VGA converter cable might do the trick. i used it with my PC so i'm guessing it works XD

This is an ancient thread, but let's clarify while we're here.
Most PC Video card VGA/HDMI/DVI video output is capable of outputting VGA. This is a feature of the video card to reduce the number of inputs required on the card. The PS3 has no such support. As a previous poster has stated, you need a VGA to DVI/HDMI adapter box that converts the PS3's HDMI output to VGA. These units are not cheap, and the output quality can depend greatly on the quality of the quality of the convertor itself.

but wouldn't you also need a ps3 rca cable for the sound? because dvi and vga do not support sound and it is very unlikely that your monitor has any speakers

HDMI is digital and VGA is analog. If you are looking to go from HDMI to VGA you will need an active converter that does digital to analog video signal conversion. I would recommend checking Part # SCA-HD-VGA.

^ the cable that you found will most likely work as long as you make sure that you are able to adjust the image settings on your computer monitor because the signal from the PS3 will probably not be the same as from your desktop. i found a cable similar to pretty cheap online ($5) at bestbbuy.com . despite the HDMI you will probably not get the full high definition affect because the receiving end of the cable is not HDMI. as for sound you may need another cable or simply a bluetooth speaker to connect to the PS3.
