Hi,

I have a HP Compaq Presario V5000 laptop, with a AMD 3300+ CPU, it should be running @ 2.0GHz...it's currently @ 800MB then peaks to 1990MB. Does a laptop CPU change speeds while in Idle?

I would like to upgrade the RAM from 1/2GB to 2GB DDR PC3200...can I use DDR2 PC5200 since they are 1/2 the price...is this laptop memory backward compatible ?

I have no knowledge of a mobile system, I did build my own PC.

Hi, :hello:

I just built my 2nd computer because of the good folks here at THF  Both my gaming rigs booted the first time & have worked till this day [yes I was lucky,] btw, I have all 4 cores up and running on my AMD PII X2 550 :kaola:

You do not need to know ANYTHING about computers to Build one...you MUST know how to read the manuals that come with the Hardware and be able to Follow instructions & if your not sure of what to do next, just post the question here @ THF

I thought as you do about DDR vs DDR2, However my research for more RAM took me to crucial to use their SCAN:

Q: Will my system recognize the maximum upgrade?

A: Possibly

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found at http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4251.

Q: What memory goes into my computer, and will a faster speed be backward-compatible?

A: DDR2 memory with support for DDR2 PC2-5300 speeds.
The above Answer by crucial is way I posted the question here at THF...also it's not my laptop I'm trying to help my brother speed it up a bit.

That program's information is incorrect. It's physically impossible to insert a DDR2 module into a DDR slot. Period. Any motherboard manual would tell you that (or tell you something that would allow you to draw that conclusion).

Hi, :hello:

HP-Compaq makes research very difficult, I will explain. The label on the back of the laptop has these:

Product Name: Presario V5000
Model Name: V5101 US

I tried V5101US @ Crucial & they gave me this for Memory:

Guaranteed-compatible memory upgrades for your HP - Compaq Presario V5101US Laptop/Notebook.

Maximum Memory: 2048MB
Slots: 2 (2 banks of 1)
Standard Memory: 256 or 512MB removable
USB Support: 2.x Compliant

Q: What memory goes into my computer, and will a faster speed be backward-compatible?

A: DDR memory with support for DDR PC3200 speeds.

Because DDR memory is backward-compatible, you can safely upgrade your system with any of the guaranteed-compatible DDR speeds listed below, even if your manual calls for PC1600 or PC2100 speeds.

NOTE: DDR & DDR2 Both fit in my Laptop:
