Hi all,

I have a question regarding my parent's hdtv. About two years ago, they purchased a 42" Samsung 1080i HDTV. I was thinking about getting them either a Blueray or HDDVD player for Christmas, but I am not sure if these movies can be played on the tv.
If I have a 1080p HDDVD or Blueray disc and I play it through the player, will it not work on their hdtv or will it just be scaled to 1080i with no huge loss in picture quality?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
Thank you.

You can set the player to scale to the TV's top resolution. 720p/1080i/1080p. 720p/1080i will still look much, much better than a standard progressive scan DVD player. A few places have early bird sales tomorrow for the 720p/1080i version of the HD DVD player for $100, with 2 movies in the box and 5 more by mail. Even if Blueray ultimately wins, for a measly $100, who cares. It's still a hell of an up converting player for standard DVD's.
