Why do HDMI cables cost so much

I was in BestBuy the other day and was shocked to see how much they were charging for HDMI cables. Even on sites such as Monster Cable, cables are going for in excess of $100. (http://www.monstercable.com/productPage.asp?pin=2371)

Other sites charge much less. (http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI-hdmi_cables.html#std)

Is there any appreciable difference in the quality of different HDMI cables? I'd like to get one that will deliver a clear, crisp picture, but when $100 plus strikes me as excessive.

Thanks.

They have to make money some how. How often does a HDMI cord goes bad? Probably not very often I assume. So, in order to make some profit they have to sell it really high. Plus the middle man needs to get paid to (besty buy, circuit city, etc).

I've seen HDMI cables for as little as $30 at Wal-Mart. When you are paying $2000 up for a widescreen TV $100 for a good cable isn't that bad of a price.

Just because you pay $2k for a TV doesn't mean you should get ass-raped on the accessories. A cable that costs 5% of the TV's price? Your paying the middle man and the marketing when you but Monster and other "name" brands. Check out some home theater forums where they do double blind tests and the results show they're all the same.

It is where the money is made with alot of sales. I work at CompUSA, and the markup on TVs/Computers isnt as much as you'd expect, but that $90 HDMI cable is about $4.00 at cost.

In the past, I've purchased cables at wholesale. I remember my reaction when I walked into Office Depot and saw their prices.

You may want to check out: http://store.pchcables.com/ He won't rip you off.

You may be able to purchase cables through your cable service provider. Mine (Insight) sells 6' HDMI cables for $11.

Dude, that was the dumbest anwser I have ever read online! You must be some kind of a freakin moron with a lot of money to waste. Why would any not stupid person pay $100 or more for something they could get for $6? Oh, I forgot, because they paid alot for their tv! I paid $122 for a 6ft hdmi/dvi cable at bestbuys and found a 10 footer for $8.95 including shipping later that day online. Don't be a big dummy and get ripped off just because you paid alot for your tv! I still can't believe how stupid that repy was!

From my own online research, no. I haven't found any difference aside from the price tag. A friend of mine swore by Monster brand cable but I have a feeling that he was just getting jipped on the price rather than getting a better product. Best bet? Go to Newegg and look over their selection. Cables Unlimited will probably have some decent deals.
