Which notebook CPU: Intel Core2 Duo T5800 or P8400?

I'm considering the purchase of new laptop computer and the one I'm looking at has all the features I want (17" screen, blu-ray playback, 320 Gb 5400 rpm HD, etc) at a price I'm good with BUT the processor is an Intel Core2 Duo T5800 (2.0 GHz). I had been hoping to find a laptop with all the features this one had for the same price but with a P8400 (2.26 GHz) processor but the price starts to push up steeply with that processor. I guess the my question is will I notice a performance hit if I go with the T5800, or is it worth waiting for prices to drop a bit to get a P8400.

My understanding of the differences between the two, aside from the .26 GHz speed difference, is the T5800 has a 2 mb L2 cache and 800 mhz FSB while the P8400 has a 3 mb L2 cache and 1066 FSB. There may be some other differences; I'm not sure.

Thanks for all input.

Thanks. No gaming. Just net surfing, office docs, photo editing, and watching Blu-ray movies on it.

I just wanted to be sure I wasn't making a mistake and end up with an underpowered system. Hate to spend $ and then find out I should have waited to get a better processor.

The difference (if slight) will only be noticed through gaming and running strenuous, multiple apps.

There's a 10W consumption difference + I think only the P-series are available with the Centrino 2 platform which comes with the new X58 chipset and wireless n capability.

Or am I mistaken?

The Txxx series uses 35watts and the Pxxxx series uses 25watts. That should make a little bit difference in battery performance.

little to no difference in actual performance assuming you're buying at that price point. pretty much every laptop in that price range no matter what chipset, mainboard processor etc has wireless n capability and dedicated graphics (the new 18.4 HP is very very nice)

The T5800 is a T7250 renamed.

How clever of them. When using CPUZ it shows up as a 7250

Hello P8400 also supports the WIndows 7 virtual XP mode while T5800 does not. Second T5800 has less level 2 cache and also based on 65 nm technology while P8400 is 45 nm.
