I bought a Dell Latitude yesterday from the Dell outlet.
Specs:
Latitude D520
Core 2 Duo 2000
512 DDR2 533
Windows media Center 2005
80 gig hard drive
CD-Rom drive ( :( )
$699 ( :D )

I really wanted at least a combo drive, but since it was so cheap and had such a beefy processor I decided to go for it. Is there anyway to replace the cd-rom drive with a combo drive or a dvdrw drive? (other than ordering straight from dell)

Fortunately cd/dvd drives are common in design. You should have no trouble finding them. cd-r/dvd-rom start at 40, dvd-r starts at 60-70. I would go NEC on brand if you can. Before you do anything I'd call dell and make sure it doesn't violate your warranty policy depending on what you have. It will probably be fine. Depending on what model you have it could be easy, or not.

wow! Awesome thanks! That is a good deal. I would ideally like a dvd burner but this is nice. I realize that the dell drives are probably just NEC or Sonys with a different face plate, but the dells have like a that drive release on the right side of the faceplate, which makes me wonder if they can be swapped out with an oem soy or NEC.
