How often are laptop models generally updated?

Bit new to laptops as I've never really shopped around for one before. I was looking at getting a 12" ultraportable, but wanted to wait for vista. As long as I'm willing to wait that long, I was wondering if it's worth waiting for a new model to come out.

How often do companies "generally" update their laptops?

I was looking specifically at the Dell XPS M1210. Does anyone know of another 12" laptop that supports a gaming card? I'm not really interested in using anything larger (not even 14") and won't be doing serious gaming with it, but would like it to be able to run some games on it at least. I'll leave the serious gaming for my desktop.

In the UltraPortable market you are right to wait. There are many slated to come out in that nitche in the next several months.

New notebook models from places like DELL come out probably once every 2 years, inbetween they will have updates to them.

For example Latitude D600 ~ Latitude D640 Same basic computer, but updates added to support new technology.
