A Sony laptop that I am currently using has developed a fault that prevents it from starting, the laptop's serial number is PCG-FX301/PCG-962C. When the on button is pushed the POST begins but the whole system shuts down again within 5-10 seconds. The mains adapter is outputting 19.7 V but the Li-ion battery voltage is only 0.1V, the battery serial number is PCGA-BP1N.
This laptop is about 5-6 years old so could the problem be that the battery has simply reached the end of it's lifetime? Also, should it be possible to power such a laptop directly from the mains adapter without having the battery fitted? I have tried this briefly but nothing happens when I push the on button.
Any comment or suggestions much appreciated.
Best regards,
