How similar is similar? There are a lot of other mic preamps with A/D
converters attached, but the Trak2 has a lot of neat features that
are, as far as I know, unique in a single box. It has more gain than
most mic preamps (up to 90 dB!) with a full +28 dBu maximum analog
output, gobs of headroom if you're using it in an analog sytsem. It
has a cool automatic dynamic mic detector that doesn't allow you to
turn phantom power on if the mic doesn't require it, and automatically
shuts it off if you plug a non-powered mic in. It has fairly good
meter resolution, balanced inserts between the mic preamp and A/D
converter, and of course a decent converter with Apogee's Soft Limit
and UV22 dithering.

So what is it that you don't need that woud allow you to consider
another device to be "similar?"

The Trak2 is something that I've found attractive, and I woudln't mind
having one around here if the price was right. Unfortunately, for me,
the "right price" is a few hundred bucks - not that I don't think it's worth
more, just that I don't have a coupel of grand's worth of need for one.
