Adobe Audition- boosting volumes on speech

I record lectures at the University I attend.
I would like to know if there's a way, with Adobe Audition, to
selectively boost the volume when a student speaks in the background
on my digital recordings.

In other words, when I record a lecture, the professor speaks loudly
and can be easily heard in the recording. When a student speaks e.g.
to answer a question or to ask one, the voice is barely heard as
compared to the professor's, because the student may be sitting in the
back of the room, away from my recorder.

So, is there way to make the speaker's voice, and the student's voice
the same volume in the recording?

Please send your responses directly to my email address:

Thanks for any help.

Aside from putting up room mics or using a hand held pass around mic to pick
up audience questions , copy the track, edit out the speakers voice, then
boost the volume, be aware there'll be plenty of background noise to deal
with once the track volume has been raised also be prepared to do a lot of
eq-ing and/or filtering.

AND you may never get the audience voices the same volume as the speakers

Yes, been there done that.

As long as the student and prof don't talk at the same time, you can use
Audition/CE's envelope feature to smoothly bring up the student's voice for
the duration of the question. The envelope you draw starts and ends at unity
gain, but rises as many dB as needed in the middle. I have a number of them
1, 3, 6 dB etc saved, and apply successively and respectively as required.

You can apply some filtering to reduce the room noise, but that will
probably still come up with the student's voice. User reaction to CDs made
this way has been good - people mostly just care about being able to
understand the question.

You can do it manually by selecting the too-soft sections and applying
a level change. Selecting a "student" section and applying Normalise
might be good enough.

Or you can try doing it automatically by applying compression. Under
"Dynamics".

No. Ask on a news group - read the news group. If for no other
reason, so that others can benefit from the advice too.

Put an omni mic or directional mic pointing downwards above the student
area and record it on a separate track, most recording thingies have at
least two tracks. It is not going to be perfect, but it will be less
bad.

In real world: NO, not as you record it now, you need to find a way of
making a better recording of the students.
