I read on google about firmware problems causing issues when playing back
(or was it recording) more than 6 simultaneous tracks. I tried to email the
guy to see if he ever got a firmware patch to fix it but his email address
is gone. Anyone know the status of that?

Don't know what happened, exactly. I think he brought it back and got
something else.

Yeah, it was recording 6 or 8 at a time, was the problem.

Playing back was apparently fine. There is a demo song in the machine,
and I've played with that. It worked fine for me.
