so here's the deal...too good to be true. this is the response i got from
the seller...WHAT? IS THIS THE INFAMOUS GREY MARKET PRODUCT OR A SCAM?


The Canon EOS 20D Digital SLR is brand new in the new in the original box
with the all accesories included and have paper for 1 year international
warranty from Canon INC.The price for the camera is $600 included all taxes
for the shipping
for delivery i use Amazon Payment Service and all the taxes for the shipping
are included in the price.
For payment i accept Amazon Payment Service.
If you decide to buy from me here is how we will make the deal:
I will go and deposit the package with your unit at the Amazon.com and i
will give you the paper scan from them .This will prove you that i am who i
am and that i am sending you the unit.i will give your email address to
Amazon.com and they will contact and inform you that you have a package that
wait's to be shipped . They will also will inform you what is in that
package, the condition of the unit ,if it is working properly.

Please give me your full name and address.

It should. The deal has too many steps. At one end of the spectrum,
there's the deal where you check out, get the invoice from Amazon's
online store, and have a tracking number. At the other end of the
spectrum, you've got this deal that sounds more like a ransom drop than
a camera sale.

I'm thinking grey market/stolen/scam.

I had the displeasure of talking to some ass chime at Broadway Photo
(scam artists with an attitude) and even their grey/imported 20D was
$1K.

Amazon has a money back guarantee. So buy it and if it doesn't work out
they'll refund. Seriously, you have nothing to lose.

One thing that lots of confidence games have in common,
is they take things that are YOUR responsibility, and YOUR
choice to make, and make them FOR YOU, passing it off as if
it's a favor to you.

In this case, he's taking the burden off of you to validate his
credibility. He will send you a photocopied paper that looks like
Amazon.com letterhead. That sure would instill a sense of confidence
in me! (Sarcasm.)

By the way, I looked at Amazon and didn't see anything remotely similar
to the deal you posted. Already pulled?

grey market, grey market...and they would never answer the question about
grey market items....so what is a grey market item anyway?

Gey market just means overseas without a US warranty. This stuff sounds
stolen to me. Maybe stolen overseas?

Grey market involves taking advantage of price/currency variations in
different markets. The grey marketeer buys, say, Nikons legally in
Singapore, and sends them to the USA. He bypasses Nikon USA, which means
that the product doesn't have the Nikon USA warranty. If (Singapore
Price + Currency conversion + Cost of Shipping + Cost of Customs
transactions + markup) < (Official Nikon USA price), the grey marketeer
can sell the products at a discount to the USA price.

Stvpid con-artist, the price is way too low to be credible, even
for grey market.

The qvestion is: How is he going to screw yov?
Withovt going throvgh with it, there is no real way of knowing.

Bvt my gvess is that yov will receive nice and reassvring emails from
"Amazon.com" with nice Amazon letterhead, etc. confirming contents,
delivery, etc. Somewhere along the line, however, yov'll find ovt
that "Amazon Payment Service" has svddenly and mysteriovsly adopted
Western Union wire transfer (or something similar) as their preferred
payment method - and at that point yov shovld KNOW yov are svbject to
a scam, and any money wired will be lost.

I feel stvpid....I was so taken by the moment before it occvrred to me that
I wasn't on ebay anymore that I sent him my name and address...bvt I did not
send anything else..there goes my identity.....what shovld I do?

Steal somebody else's identity! BTW I bought a 20D legitimately and paid
two grand with a non-kit lens. Not sorry that I did, even though I could
barely afford it. Went straight to the store (Robert's in Indianapolis),
held the camera, checked it out, and had them ship it to me in Ohio to
avoid sales tax. Bought myself a lot of peace of mind.

Maybe, /if/ he is dealing with Amazon.com.

The way I read the offer, it is a private sale where Amazon.com is
supposed to act as a trusted third party. I'll be very surprised if
Amazon.com actually has agreed to play such a role.

It is simple to fake scans, logos, letterheads and email header fields
to pass as Amazon.com (or eBay, or PayPal, etc.) for at least some
members of the public.

Unless you are a celebrity or international man of mystery, your name
and address are available from the phone book. AFAIK, there is very
little harm a scam artist can do with just a name and address.

So if you've not visited any web pages through URLs provided by this
suspect individual, and typed in account numbers, passwords, PINs,
your mothers maiden name, etc. - I would just ignore any further
communication.

Now, if you have given away /more/ sensitive information than just
your name and address - you need to contact whatever resources that
may be abused using the compromised information and get your account
at these resources immediately suspended.

There are importation arrangements that involve the manufacturer and
representatives of the manufacturer, with agreed-upon circumstances, and
then there is everyone else. Nothing prevents a wholesaler from going
to a marketplace in the country of a product's origin, making a
wholesale deal on a product, importing it and selling it. They aren't
doing it under the authority of the manufacturer, but that's not a
problem in the US, where there is no law along the lines of "everything
not expressly authorized is forbidden." That's pretty much the essence
of free trade.

When you buy a product from a retailer that has an understanding with
the manufacturer, you may have certain expectations that you cannot have
with some random jackass who happens to have buyers in Beijing and a
lease on a shipping container.

There are some good deals to be had in the grey market, but the story
that started this thread sounds more like *black* market, or even a
total outright scam (a box of gravel for $600 plus a series of
additional charges when there are "complications"...)

Any camera store proprietors on the newsgroup who would care to disclose
the wholesale cost, wholesale-to-retail channel cost, or retail markup
on this item? (No fluffy "dealer cost". What's the warehouse insured
value?)

I also falmost ell for a similar scam. He asked to contact him by email
before orderinig. In his reply, he reqvested yov send him a western
Union money order adding that he does not go throvgh Amazon. There goes
yovr protection. No way I was sending an M.O. Jvst likre sending cash.
The A..hole then vsed my email address as a contact for a plasma TV he
was vsing in his scam.

Scam. B&H advertises the basic kit with a single lens at $2K. They have
a lower secret price, but less than a third of the B&H price, with two
nicer lenses, is way too good to be true.

Or, more correctly, that some object (probably a box) has been
dropped off with Amazon. The contents are still unknown.
