The soaring sales of PS3 units are a major contributing factor here, in my opinion. I don't particularly care for extra features, so long that the movie itself has excellent audio and video. And that's what people care about. So the war between the two formats is mostly fought on convenience: since a large portion of early adopters are also video game players, they're more likely to buy a PS3 than a stand alone HD-DVD player or the HD-DVD add on for the XBOX360.
