I have this lens. I paid 115 USD which won't help you in the UK. You can see
a couple of pictures I took with it at

http://users.adelphia.net/~brooksro

Go to Digital Photos. The two bottom pics were taken with that lens. The
moon was at 300 mm and the poppies at 105 mm.

I bought this lens from B&H Photo and it works well for my current
needs, as it is very light to carry and it fit my current pocketbook
requirements. They sell it for $299 with a $50 mail-in-rebate from
Nikon. That is probably the $249 you have seen advertised.

I assume you bought the G version of the lens and not the ED-D version
of the lens.

The lens does well at 105 mm, that is for sure. I took decent sharp
pictures all the way at 300 mm as well, but the color isn't quite as
bright. A tripod is all but required for sharpness at the extended
focal lengths.

Hi Stephen,

Not sure if this is allowed in this group, but I have mint condition
one for sale on Ebay at the moment. Mines is not the only one, so you
could have a choice.

It's a very good lens in its class and they tend to go for a good bit
less than £249 on ebay

Have a look, you might be surprised.

By for now.

It's quite soft at 300mm and the images are so similar to the non-ED 'G'
version at less than half the price that the 'G' is the better deal. The
ED version only has one ED element, about in the middle of the lens, if I
remember correctly, and that's more of an advertising hype feature than a
true optical improvement.

Both have low contrast but that's insignificant in digital photography
(unless you have Photoshopophobia).

I have a 'G' and it's very much worth what I paid for it (US $99). £249
is a horribly inflated price for the ED lens.
