Very new to using laptops just having purchased an ACER Aspire 3002LCi.

Browsing at the local Target store I saw a laptop cooling pad with
fans. Curious if these accessories are worth it? Now reading online I
see some blow up while others blow down. I think my Acer draws air in
the bottom and out the powered side vent so I'm guessing a unit that
blows upwards would aid in providing cooling air.

Don't waste your cash. Place the "notebook" on a flat surface.
"Laptop" is somewhat a misnomer; most are designed for placement on a
desk/table.

They can be useful for desktop replacement monsters, of the sort with
desktop P4 inside them, as these can get worryingly hot, however they are
not comfortable for use on your lap. If your laptop doesn't get HOT then
don't bother with one. If it does then using one of these will prolong it's
life. As Q said, it will work better on a desk anyway.

Just to prove that opinions vary :) I use one of these
http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=PA248U
with my Dell Inspiron 8500. (a mobile pentium *not* a P4)

It runs noticeably cooler. Without it the left palmrest (hard drive area)
and keyboard are emit an uncomfortable amount of heat. Much cooler with.

I use them on both of my notebooks. They make a noticeable
difference in the internal temperature of the units. Less heat equals
longer life. In addition we use one of the notebooks for navigating
in the Jeep. The heat of the notebook on your lap can get a bit much
after a short time without the cooler. With it you could have it on
your lap all day without any heat problem. When you get yours
consider one with a USB hub.
