Toshiba PC to TV via S-Video to RCA adapter

My Toshiba A70 laptop has an S-Video TV-Out. My TV has an S-Video In (which
normally has a DVD Player connected to it) as well as an additional set of
RCA-In jacks (which normally has a VCR connected to it).

Unplugging the S-Video cable from the DVD Player and connecting it to the
Laptop S-Video out works well. The laptop recognizes it is connected to a
TV, and using Display Properties I can direct the output nicely to the TV.

Since I don't often watch videos directly from my laptop, and switching the
wires can be a pain, I thought I would get an S-Video to RCA adapter, and
connect my laptop to my VCR's front RCA inputs when needed.

When I do this, the Audio works fine, but the Laptop does not recognize that
a TV is connected so does not send the Video signal (Display Properties says
"Not Connected" under the TV section). Now here's the interesting part. If
I connect the Laptop directly to the TV via the S-Video, all works well as I
explained earlier. If at this point, while the laptop is sending the video
signal, I switch the cables so that the S-Video to RCA adapter is used to
connect to my VCR RCA inputs, the video continues to be sent to the TV.

This suggests to me that the S-Video to RCA cable is indeed working ... the
problem is the laptop knowing to send the video signal. So here is my
question ... is there any way of forcing the laptop to send output to the
TV-Out port (even when it does not detect a connection)?

Return the adapter and exchange it for an S-video switch.
